“Every Day Counts: Level Up Attendance” is the theme of Laredo ISD’s daily student attendance efforts. This morning, LISD conducted a spirited ceremony proclaiming September as Attendance Awareness Month. Although LISD’s attendance rate is higher than the state’s average, the District wants all of its students to be in class every day and on time.
“We believe that every day a student is in the classroom is an opportunity to learn, build relationships, and access the support of LISD’s dedicated staff members and resources,” said LISD Interim Superintendent Guillermo Pro. “We want all of our students to be in class today so that they can be ready for tomorrow.”
Addressing the audience was LISD Board of President Juan Ramirez, Jr., who stressed the importance of daily student attendance and its critical role in student achievement along with the consequences of chronically missing school.
Bonnie Najera, Marketing Manager for Burger King, announced the continuation of Burger King’s collaboration with Laredo ISD to emphasize the importance of daily school attendance. As partners in education, every month Burger King provides Royal Family Feast certificates for free meals as incentives for students and “crowns” students with perfect attendance.
Supporting LISD attendance efforts are Webb County Justice of the Peace Judges Juan Paz, Oscar Liendo, and Danny Dominguez.
LISD recognized parents of students who have maintained perfect attendance since August 2013. These include Mr. and Mrs. Emerico Escamilla, parents of Leonardo Escamilla who attends Martin High School. Leonardo is also a former winner of the Drive Sames for Education car giveaway.
Sara Guajardo, whose daughter Leann D. Delgadillo attends Martin High and the Esther G. Buckley Early College High School, was recognized for her support of daily student attendance.
Also receiving perfect attendance honors, Maria De Los Angeles Flores, mother of Marcos A. Hernandez Flores who attends the Hector J. Garcia Early College High School.
Entertainment for the ceremony was provided by the Martin High School Mariachi Los Tigres del Sur under the direction of Ruben Guadian. Garcia Early College High School student Isabella Mendoza and Nixon High School student Danny Valdez started the event with the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance.
City of Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño concluded the ceremony by reading a proclamation commending LISD for its efforts to reduce absenteeism and address the reasons why students miss school. “This starts with prevention and early intervention, including developing routines and relationships that create a sense of belonging.”
